Alaska Photo Adventure Cruise

img_3545 Whales, bears and birds abound where mountains meet the sea! The Tongass National Forest, our nation’s largest national forest and the most extensive remaining temperate rainforest in the Northern Hemisphere. Throughout our travels we’ll find unique opportunities to view eagles, bears, whales, and the breathtaking vistas.

The grand scale of Alaska can be overwhelming and is often enjoyed most through its details. We’ll explore spruce forests and beaches full of colorful tide pools. Though frequently obscured by a veil of mist, color is everywhere. Life is everywhere.

The cold waters are rich and teeming… the shoreline and old-growth forests lush. The Tlinkets have no word in their language for “starvation.” They have a saying, “When the tide is out, the table is set.” Our table is set as well, for fun, for adventure and for discovery. Look within… look around. Breathe the cool, crisp air. Listen to the sounds of rain on the water, waves on the shore and a not so distant Humpback whale as it takes a breath…

  • Day 1 Arrival in Petersburg

Arrive in Petersburg and transfer to hotel. Meet for dinner and a short orientation to the trip.

    Day 2 Board our Yacht

In the morning we will explore Petersburg on foot. Walking along the docks and shoreline we will see many birds and meet some of the locals. We will get a take-out lunch and eat at the picnic tables by the dock if weather permits.

About 2:00 pm we will board our yacht--—the M/V Northern Song and motor north to Thomas Bay, anchoring in either Scenery Cove or Cascade Creek and, weather permitting, go for a hike.

    Day 3

The following six days’ adventures are dependent upon the wildlife. Since we are not committed to a strict schedule, we can take advantage of new discoveries that we make along the way—stopping to enjoy birds, whales or a magnificent sunset—whatever opportunities may be presented.

Through the guidance of the leaders, participants will help decide the preferences and priorities for each of these days. However, each day will include one or more of the destinations listed.

    Day 4 through 8

    Day 10

Our final breakfast before return flights home.

    Locations we MAY Visit

There is never enough time to “do it all,” however, these are the main highlights we will try to fit into our amazing journey!

    Le Conte Glacier

The most active of Alaska’s tidewater glaciers is almost continually calving and is the fastest moving glacier in the world. Watch in awe as huge chunks, some as large as a house, sheer off with a thunderous roar.

    Baird Glacier

Baird Glacier, at the head of Thomas Bay, is no longer a tidewater glacier and offers an excellent opportunity for a fun hike to observe recent plant succession in the wake of the glacier’s retreat.

    Brothers Island

There is a Steller sea lion haul-out here which typically has hundreds of animals. It is a great photographic opportunity!

    Admiralty Island / Eliza Harbor

This beautiful remote bay on Admiralty Island is home to the highest concentration of brown bears in the world!

    Cape Fanshaw

This location offers some of the best opportunities for salmon fishing as well as whale watching!

    Cascade Creek

Spectacular Cascade Creek tumbles down from the mountains until it roars into the bay. We will enjoy a wonderful hike through the spruce forest and misty spray of the creek.

    Baranof Island / Warm Springs

A beautifully rugged island, it is the location of Warm Springs Bay, natural hot spring pools and incredible scenery!

  • Accommodations
  • Scandia House

One of only two hotels in Petersburg, the Scandia is close to the docks and the center of town. The adjacent coffee house offers great excellent coffee and muffins!

    Northern Song

Our 84’ yacht, the M/V Northern Song, offers accommodations for up to 8 participants plus crew. This small ship adventure will take us through areas where larger ships can’t venture to explore the real and often hidden Inside Passage!
