Alaska in Winter Art & Photo Adventure Cruise

With a maximum of only 6 participants on a private yacht, this trip offers the most intimate exploration available for this stunning region!

Hands-on photo instruction throughout the trip will include exposure techniques, composition, image workflow and editing with Lightroom and Photoshop. Sketching and water color instruction by Catherine Hamilton will offer fantastic techniques for both wildlife and landscape.

Great for all skill levels as well as for the non-photographer companion who enjoys nature, wildlife and fun!

Humpback Whales, icebergs, glaciers and more abound where mountains meet the sea in the Tongass National Forest, our nation’s largest national forest and the most extensive remaining temperate rainforest in the Northern Hemisphere. Throughout our travels we’ll find unique opportunities to view and photograph eagles, whales and the breathtaking vistas.

Each day will offer new adventures to find wildlife and scenery to enjoy and photograph. Our luxury yacht offers roomy common areas for workshops and sharing our images. Meals prepared by our chef are fresh, varied and delicious!

Our trip is limited to a maximum of only 6 participants! Compare this trip to our closest competitors and see that they take nearly 8x our number, yet charge about the same price for their best rooms, and they do not even include accommodations for the nights before and after your trip like we do!

All of our cabins have en suite, private bath. Standard cabins include a full-size bed and a single bunk. The suite includes a spacious cabin with one queen bed.

  • Itinerary
  • Day 1 Arrival in Petersburg

Arrive in Petersburg and transfer to hotel. Meet for dinner and a short orientation to the trip.

    Day 2 Board our Yacht

In the morning we will explore Petersburg on foot. Walking along the docks and shoreline we will see many birds and meet some of the locals. We will get a take-out lunch and eat at the picnic tables by the dock if weather permits.

About 2:00 pm we will board our yacht--—the M/V Northern Song and motor north to Thomas Bay, anchoring in either Scenery Cove or Cascade Creek and, weather permitting, go for a hike.

    Day 3 through 8

The following six days’ adventures are dependent upon the weather and wildlife. Since we are not committed to a strict schedule, we can take advantage of new discoveries that we make along the way—stopping to enjoy birds, whales or a magnificent sunset—whatever opportunities may be presented.

Through the guidance of the leaders, participants will help decide the preferences and priorities for each of these days. However, each day will include one or more of the destinations listed.

    Locations and Activities

There is never enough time to “do it all,” however, these are the main highlights we will try to fit into our amazing journey!

Kevin Loughlin will guide and instruct in the art of photography while Catherine Hamilton will  instruct and nurture sketching and water color skills. Throughout the daylight hours we will maximize our time enjoying photography and field sketching, leaving the darker hours to learning image processing and taking time to paint and expand upon your artistry.

Le Conte Glacier OR DAWES GLACIER

The most active of Alaska’s tidewater glaciers are almost continually calving and is the fastest moving glacier in the world. Watch in awe as huge chunks, some as large as a house, sheer off with a thunderous roar.

    Admiralty Island / SEYMOUR CANAL

This beautiful remote bay on Admiralty Island is home to the highest concentration of Humpback Whales through the winter months. Many of the whales choose not to migrate every year and in winter we will enjoy their majestic gracefulness with blows hanging like clouds in the golden glow of the never fully rising sun.!

    Brothers Island

There is a Steller sea lion haul-out here which typically has hundreds of animals. It is a great photographic opportunity!

    Cascade Creek

Spectacular Cascade Creek tumbles down from the mountains until it roars into the bay. We will enjoy a wonderful hike through the spruce forest and misty spray of the creek.

    Day 9 Return to Port

After a final morning of exploring we will head back to Petersburg, arriving late-afternoon. After dinner in town we will return to our hotel to relax and prepare for our return home!

    Day 10

Our final breakfast before return flights home.

  • Accommodations
  • Scandia House

One of only two hotels in Petersburg, the Scandia is close to the docks and the center of town. The adjacent coffee house offers great excellent coffee and muffins!

    Northern Song

Our 84’ yacht, the M/V Northern Song, offers accommodations for up to 8 participants plus crew. This small ship adventure will take us through areas where larger ships can’t venture to explore the real and often hidden Inside Passage!
