What is one of your favorite bird families or species and why?
My favorites families are hummingbirds and Tanagers because they are so colorful and they can impact to everyone who sees them. Hummingbird they are so amazing from the smallest bird in world to the stunning Sword-billed Hummingbird.
What is one of your favorite birding locations?
I have some birding locations that I love… I will start with the northwest and southern Ecuador because the bio-diversity is so incredible, it covers many different habitats from subtropics at 300m to the paramo at 3.800m and we will see so many great creatures.
The second one is Northern Peru where we find the most beautiful humming bird in the world, the Marvelous Spatuletail and it is one of the most endemic rich areas in the world and includes the endemic Long-whiskered owlet.
The third one is Santha Martha. This locations has the most beautiful views of the Caribbean, plus the birding is great here -- it is home to 20 of 69 Colombian endemics and there is so much to discover.
Can you describe the experience or "spark" bird that first got you hooked on birding?
It change my life when I went to Amazon to do my thesis for my first degree in Tourism Management. I was so impressed with all the biodiversity that we have there, especially the birds: Toucans, Tanagers, Hummingbirds, Antbirds, and more. But I was truly hooked when I saw the roosting and flying Lyre-tailed Nightjar and the Ocellated Tapaculo. It was one of the experiences that I try to pass on to everybody.
What do you believe is currently one of the most important avian conservation issues?
I think that Choco area [Ecuador and Colombia] is one of them because the biodiversity is so incredible. it is one of the riches places in the earth that everybody needs to visit. The range for this habitat is very restricted only in Northwest Ecuador and Southwest Colombia.
