Speckled Hummingbird
I am currently in the process of reorganizing and re-cataloging all my digital images as I change management software. It is a huge undertaking with over 200,000 images to sort, name, keyword and file (or delete). However, it is also a great opportunity to enjoy past trips and events all over again! As I go through my Ecuador images I can’t help going slowly through the hummingbirds I have photographed over the years.

Purple-throated Woodstar
Violet-tailed Sylph
Ecuador has about 130 species of hummingbirds of which I have photographed nearly half. Some are very plain, like the Speckled Hummingbird at the top of this post. Others are colorful, like the Purple-throated Woodstar above and the Violet-tailed Sylph at left. Many have ornate markings like “boots” or “racquet-tails” or both. Some have long bills, some short. Then there are the non-hummingbirds that also feed on nectar like the female Glossy Flowerpiercer pictured below. All are worthy of photographing!

We will be exploring Ecuador again this summer… a special Hummingbird Photography Workshop August 6-15 — right after our Galapagos Islands Family Adventure July 25-Aug 4. I can’t wait to photograph all these wonderful creatures again!

All images of these hummingbirds were taken with Canon DSLR bodies and a Sigma 50-500 EX zoom. Many of the closer images also used a 25mm extension tube to allow closer focus.
