Color is, of course, what hummingbirds are best known for. So here is a splash of Central American hummingbird color — and more great names! We’ll start with the Violet-crowned Woodnymph above, found in Costa Rica and Panama.

This tiny guy (2.5 inches) is aptly named Snowcap. They are found in the Caribbean foothills of Costa Rica and Panama.
This female Green-breasted Mango was kind enough to momentarily spread her colorful tail. The male is all green with a dark blue-green streak on the breast. They can be found throughout northern Central America.
In the Chiriqui Highlands of Costa Rica and Panama, the brilliant Fiery-throated Hummingbird can be found buzzing through the misty cloud forest.
As with all iridescence, the bright colors are created by refraction of light through the feathers, not pigment. So when hummingbirds are not facing you, their colorful throats appear mostly black. I waited patiently for this guy to face me… well worth the wait!
Top three images created with Canon DSLR camera bodies and Sigma 50-500 EX. The Fierythroated Hummingbird was photographed with a Leica D-Lux 3, through a window, next to a feeder.
