Shining SunbeamI couldn’t help myself… I just had to add more pics of the hummingbirds of Ecuador. There are some really cool species and some intriguing names as well. The one above is one of my favorites, the Shining Sunbeam. What a great name!

Sword-billed HummingbirdThis implausible creature can’t hide its name… the Sword-billed Hummingbird. It holds its head up high–that’s the only way they can balance the weight of that super-long bill!

Masked FlowerpiercerAnother non-hummingbird, the Masked Flowerpiercer is a nectar robber. Flowerpiercers do just that, they pierce the back-end of the flower and rob the nectar without pollinating the flower. Once the hole is made, hummingbirds with small bills can also rob the nectar from deep flowers they would otherwise never taste.

Green ThorntailThis Green Thorntail stopped its feeding frenzy to preen and I was able to capture its spread tail in the brief second that it stretched. There’s that 1% luck we talked about previously!

Giant Hummingbird

The Giant Hummingbird is 7 inches tall. Its flight more resembles a swift than a hummingbird!

Hummingbirds are fun to watch, but to photograph they are all at once exciting and frustrating. They are a great challenge!
All images of these hummingbirds were taken with Canon DSLR bodies and a Sigma 50-500 EX zoom. Many of the closer images also used a 25mm extension tube to allow closer focus.

Ecuador because is such a diverse country. The weather, the colonial cities and the people are just fantastic. Nothing compares to the landscapes of the Highlands, the lush of the Amazon Jungle Forest, the exotic Beaches of the Coast and the mystery of the Galapagos Islands.
