Continuing with the patience theme, another aspect is waiting for the light. In a previous post I mentioned the “magic hour” of low angle, warm light at the dawn and dusk periods. Getting images at this time of day can greatly enhance the impact of your photo. However, seeing the light and understanding its movement throughout the day is very important for putting yourself in the right place at the right time to make the most of shadows and highlights.

Once you have chosen your shooting location, beware of additional external factors that can make or break and image. The top image of the canoeist was taken mere minutes after the image below but look at the difference. After taking the below image, I realized the clouds were moving in and would cover the sun and reduce the worst glare. Just a few extra minutes was all it took get the better image.
If you visit a nice location in the afternoon but realize the light is causing too much glare or casting too many shadows, come back in the morning and see how different it might be!
