The humble beginnings of the PA YOUNG BIRDERS CLUB on March 21, 2009

It finally happened! Our first official meeting of the PA Young Birders Club! We had 12 total in attendance, 6 adults (including me) and six kids ages 7 – 14. This first meeting was an introduction to the club and the desire to bring kids of similar interests together.

We spent about an hour of planning time indoors, with many thanks to the kind folks at the Mill Grove Audubon Sanctuary who opened their conference room doors to our needs. After some discussion of the direction of the club and how the adults will assist the kids in the endeavor, we headed out for a bird walk on the Mill Grove property.

Though still too early for most neotropical migrants, we still had a fair number of birds. Carolina Chickadees and Tufted Titmouse flocks roamed through the leafless forest while a Red-tailed Hawk and a Cooper’s Hawk soared above. Blue Jays and Crows were often heard and a few distant Common and Hooded Mergansers offered fleeting glimpses through the trees along the Perkiomen Creek.

Downey and Red-bellied Woodpeckers were found along with a Brown Creeper and Cardinals sat up and sang as we walked passed. Our walk finished back at the parking lot where a pair of Eastern Phoebes called as they sallied for bugs.

Our next meeting with be on Sunday, April 19 at 2:00 PM, probably back at Mill Grove (location to be finalized soon). Future meetings will be held in different locations throughout the southeast PA region. For more information on the PA Young Birders Club, please contact Kevin at [email protected].

    Great job!!

I noted the word “assist” was emphasized…hope you weren’t refering to me in my zeal.. If you are, so noted…. (Even if not, so noted!!) 😉

We still do have slate colored juncoes at our feeders… and I am pretty sure I saw cowbirds…if not, they were common grackles…. Cowbirds are new to our yard for this spring!

    Kevin,

Congratulations! You are about to embark on an amazing journey. Working with young people, I’ve learned more about birds, nature, and life that I could have ever imagined.

Please let us know if there’s anything we can do!

    all the best ~kim

I was just going to say how proud I am to see a PA Young Birders’ Club, being from Ohio, but I see Kim has been here already! Whoot!
