It was well into twilight when we reached Cascade Creek in Thomas Bay today, making photography difficult. Surprisingly I was able to get a Verizon signal and my MiFi to blog!
Departing Petersburg Harbor we met our welcoming committee… five Stellar’s Sea Lions rested on the buoy and watched as we passed.
We soon came across the first Humpback Whale of our trip as we motored north in Frederick Sound (notice the icebergs from LeConte Bay in the background!). It lazily fed, now and then coming up with mouth agape, but more often surfacing with the tell-tale blow and sinking quietly. It fluked a few times, but with shallow dives. The above image shows apparent “flick-feeding” which it did briefly.
After arriving in Thomas Bay we enjoyed a dinner of blackened halibut then went ashore for a walk to enjoy the waning sunlight. A great start to our trip!
