The Monarch Butterflies are laying their last eggs and will soon begin their incredible journey south! For this season they are approaching their 8th generation or so… and this generation will have that special gene that tells them to depart North America and fly off to the mountains of Mexico!

Why does this happen? How do they know? So many questions that nature poses are yet to be answered fully, but rather we must stay amazed at the miracles all around us.

I would highly recommend joining one of the many Monarch Butterfly programs happening over the next few weekends in PA and elsewhere. Here are a couple in my vicinity:

Butterfly release celebration is 10 a.m. to noon at Upper Schuylkill Valley park, 1600 Black Rock Road, Upper Providence. Family-friendly event features presentaion by Ann Ward of Winged Wonders with butterflies released for their migration. Outdoors, weather permitting. Suggested donation: $4 per person. Information: 610-948-5170.

Monarch Madness: Raising Butterflies, a program for adults and children ages 6 and older at Green Lane Nature Center, Green Lane, begins at 1 p.m. $4 fee per container. Get a close-up look at the life cycle of the Monarch butterfly. Participants will build their own butterfly rearing containers and learn how to properly feed and car for caterpillars. Pre-registration required: 484-674-3748. Information: www.phs.montcopa.org.

Cape May Point and the CMBO will be sponsoring a Monarch tagging demonstrations throughout the fall as well!

Find a program close to home and enjoy!
