As we walked through the forest during our Waterfall Photo Workshop we came across some wonderful fungus growing on a moss-covered fallen hemlock tree. As we photographed I noticed movement on one of the orange-colored masses.

Two large (over an inch long), black and orange beetles appeared to be munching away on the fungus. I was not familiar with these little characters and had to look them up.

Using my iPhone’s Audubon Guides app for bugs, I found the following with the simple search parameters of the app:

Interesting little critters! The Audubon Guides app proved to be a great tool as well! It offered quick and easy search capabilities to find my beetles and offered lots of great info as well. I have used these Audubon Guides for salamanders, butterflies and wildflowers and would highly recommend them. Check them out at AudubonGuides.com for more info and to see all their excellent apps. I am sure I will be posting more reviews of their products as I get the opportunity to test them in the field!
