Hummers Hatched!
Jun 8, 2009 | by Adrian Binns
They hatched! My guess is that at least one Ruby-throated Hummingbird chick hatched yesterday, June 7, and the second one likely hatched today. By my calculations today would be Day 2.
When I arrived at the nest site the female was away from the nest. 12 minutes later she came in and landed on the side of the nest (above) that was furthest away from the branch. She tilted her head forward and, though I can not see the chicks, put her bill into two mouths (below). I presume that it was two because I could see her position her bill to two different areas of the nest. It is an all protein diet for the kids. She would wiggle her body so as to help her regurgitate small insects into their tiny mouths.
Then it was off again. This time I saw her return to a nearby branch about 20 minutes later and preen, before taking off once again. She may well have been feeding herself during this time. It was 35 minutes before she returned to the nest, feeding them once again (below), before settling in to brood the chicks. The chicks at this stage of development will be bare naked and helpless. Their first pinfeathers begin to show around day 6 and their eyes will not open until a few days later. It should be between day 18 and 20 that they fledge. It will be exciting to see how things progress.
