ANTARCTICA: Danco Island
May 27, 2010 | by Kevin Loughlin
Our Gentoos greeted us once again, this time on Danco Island. The penguins inhabited the island at all levels, from the edge of the sea up to the peak.
Antarctic Terns gracefully filled the skies over our landing site. In breeding, they would have a full, black cap. Unlike the Arctic Terns, they do not migrate when night falls for months on end, they stay through the darkness.
Antarctic Fur Seals were ware of our presence and kept a watchful eye from a safe distance.
The vista from the summit of Danco Island is spectacular. Ice flowed by in the channel, some with Crabeating Seals lazing upon them.
Time to motor on, joining the ice in the calm water… so much more to see!
