Sunny Southern California?
Jan 7, 2016 | by Greg Miller
Greg Miller’s first Big Year Tour is underway in sunny… umm, well, rainy southern California. An unexpected turn in the weather, thanks to El Niño, has erased the typical sunny skies and replaced them with rain and yes, snow in the mountains east of Los Angeles. Interestingly, when Greg did his original Big Year in 1998, it was also an El Niño year.
However, Greg, co-leader Steve Ritt and their group have found about 160 species, with two full birding days still to go. So although the birding has been dampened, it has not stopped! Yesterday that added some good birds: Mountain Plover, Prairie Falcon, Ferruginous Hawk and Bell’s Sparrow.
Today the group will be birding their way to Palm Springs through the Moreno Valley, then off to the famous Salton Sea on Friday!
