The final installment of our Galapagos Family Adventure for 2009 finds us high in the Andes of central Ecuador. Hummingbird diversity is greatest at these mid-higher altitudes and we actually saw about 15 species of hummers (and had a great lunch of baked trout) in the few hours we had to enjoy at Guango Lodge.

The Sword-billed Hummingbird is certainly a prize. An overall length of over 8 inches, the bill takes up half that measurement!

The Collared Inca in its black-and-white plumage is quite striking without being “colorful.”

The Chestnut-breasted Coronet stands out as it shows off of bright breast and belly.

The Long-tailed Sylph gathers many oohs and aahs… deservingly so!

The feeders at Guango Lodge are a-buzz rain or shine as the hummers need to feed their metabolism! The entertainment factor is quite fulfilling. However, don’t pass up the opportunity to walk along the river’s edge as you could find Capped Dipper (on which we dipped this time) and Torrent Duck… which we saw!
