ANTARCTICA: Port Lockroy
May 28, 2010 | by Kevin Loughlin
Now a museum showcasing Antarctic station life, Port Lockroy was British ‘Base A’ during WWII. The above image is of the kitchen left as it was in the 1940s.
Our expected Gentoos stood sentinel to a locked, red door. The station is typically manned during the daylight months, however, we arrived a couple weeks after the human residents had dispersed.
Across the cove on Jougla Point, remnants of the whaling days can once again be seen as Gentoos stood watch over two full skeletal remains of what looked to me like humpback or or possibly fin whale.
Surprisingly, we enjoyed yet another Macaroni Penguin here!
