Kevin and Lisa Loughlin – July 2, 2010

The day could not have been more perfect. A low pressure system had moved into the area and we had high cloud cover and no wind. We departed Petersburg Harbor aboard the motor yacht ALASKA LEGEND a little before 10:00am and were greeted by Steller’s Sea Lions as we entered Frederick Sound on our way to LeConte Glacier. The Sound was full of icebergs, a good sign that we might be able to make it all the way through LeConte Bay to the Glacier.

As we entered the bay we were greeted by several very large icebergs stranded in the low tide… a great photo opportunity for everyone aboard as Captain Dennis pulled the bow of the boat close enough for us to touch the blue ice.

Maneuvering through the Bay was tricky as it was full of icebergs, many of which had Harbor Seals basking… some with new pups. We slowly wound our way through, sometimes wondering if we should use one of the many waterfalls as a backdrop for the ceremony. Captain Dennis found a path through the ice each time we thought we would need to turn back.

Eventually we rounded the last bend in the glacial carving and got our first glimpse of the incredible frozen river… the fastest moving ice on earth… LeConte Glacier.
The ceremony was a brief 15 minutes or so, as it was very cold–as one might expect–but never the less spectacular with a couple of brief interruptions as the glacier cracked and grumbled. We gave our rings and shared our kiss…

… and the glacier responded…

Congratulations Kevin and Lisa! I bet there aren't many wedding photos with glaciers as a backdrop. How wonderful! Birders dress-up nicely – you both look beautiful!

Big time congrats from all of us here on the sizzling mainland (I could use some of that blue ice in my tea about now)….
