PERU 2010 – Part 15: The Oxbow Lakes (Chapter 2)

Black-capped Donacobius |
As we continued along our quiet boat ride (other than the drunken donkey calls of the Horned Screamers) a few Black-capped Donacobius offered wonderful, close observations.
Great Black Hawk and Tropical Kingbirds |
As a Great Black Hawk sailed by a pair of Tropical Kingbirds took flight to harrass the large raptor. It landed deep inside tall grasses to avoid the pestering birds, but they stayed closed and resumed their attack each time the hawk tried to fly.
Neotropic Cormorant |
A few Neotropic Cormorants and Anhingas enjoyed the rising sun, drying themselves in the warmth before taking flight.
Sungrebe |
A finfoot, not really a grebe, Sungrebes are usually secretive birds that prefer the shadows of the shoreline as they snap damselflies and other bugs from low-hanging branches.
Snail Kite |
A few Snail Kites searched for Apple Snails in the shallow edges of the lake.
Large-billed Tern |
With a shape much like a skimmer, the Large-billed Terns fished in similar style to skimmers while at the lake.
Proboscis Bats |
The shelter for the parked pontoon boats also offered a nice shady spot preferred by a colony of Proboscis Bats. These interesting creatures are often found in shaded areas over or near water and wetlands from Central America into much of South America.
