Departing Cusco early we headed east toward the Amazon Basin. Birding all the way, of course, regular showers made visibility difficult.

A brief stop at the top of the pass allowed quick views of a pair of Mountain Caracaras, their beautiful black-and-white pattern offering opportunity for quick identification.

| In the town of Paucartambo |
The final ‘big town’ we passed through was Paucartambo, where we stopped for a short walk to stretch out legs and prepare for a long journey yet to come.
As we continued through the mountains, descending into cloudforest, the rain also continued. A few brief stops allowed some birding but the rain quickly put a dampener on the longer walks.
Finally arriving at the final pass, the entry point to the Manu Biosphere Reserve. It was all downhill from here… along the ‘exhilarating’ Manu Road!
