Cradle of Birding 2012

This year’s Cradle of Birding event at the John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge was another great success!
The PA Young Birder’s were represented by me (Kevin Loughlin) and Debbie Beer. (Note: Adrian Binns is currently in Australia!)
The PA Young Birders sponsored two bird walks for kids for a total of over 90 kids, parents and scout leaders. What a great turnout!
Many other non-profit organizations sponsored booths and events, such as the Philadelphia Zoo’s live animal demonstrations including critters from the Philadelphia Zoo and the always popular “Raptor Show” featuring hawks, owls, and eagles.
There was also non-birding workshops on fly tying and nature photography. Live music was provided by Tinicum’s own “Environmental Troubadour, Glen Waldek and there was be free hot dogs and soft drinks available free for everyone. Area carvers were on hand creating amazing pieces of art and several of the Heinz NWR volunteer naturalists led early morning birding walks. There was even an archery range on-site! The “trackless trolley” took many non-walkers on a tour of the refuge to learn about the different habitats and wildlife.
Be sure to come next year… the event is typically the second weekend in September, but be sure to watch the Heinz Refuge website or the Friends of Tinicum Marsh site for details and updates.
