ALASKA: Day of the Whales
Jul 22, 2010 | by Kevin Loughlin
It was cloudy and drizzling when we reached Five Fingers Lighthouse where Frederick Sound meets Stephens Passage. This is prime area for Humpback Whales and halibut fishing!
At least 10 whales were individually bubble-net feeding. This is when they blow bubble to create a curtain surrounding the krill or herring, entrapping the prey before they lunge through the roiling mass engulfing huge quantities!
We paused for some fishing opportunities as well… when I was able to catch a 40 pound halibut! My brother, however, caught one that weighed 45 pounds! We have a couple of full freezers now!
While Wade was cleaning our Halibut we enjoyed more whales!
