Northern CardinalWe had our second meeting of the PA Young Birders Club and added a few new participants! Today’s group was 16 — 8 kids and 8 adults. A few from the last meeting could not join us today due to other commitments, but they let me know by email that they are still interested.

We again met at the Mill Grove Audubon Sanctuary. It was a warm, partly sunny day and as we had “business” part of our meeting we were easily distracted by blue birds, kinglets, robins, chickadees and others flitting about the grove.
After making some club decisions including where and when to meet next, we headed off on the “Lucy Trail” to see what we could see. A cowbird and a pair of downy woodpeckers immediately caught our eye. Cardinals and robins were singing everywhere. A white-throated sparrow added to the orchestra.
Spring was all around with several wildflowers identified along with typical garden flowers and some budding and flowering trees and shrubs, too. The woods were somewhat quiet, but along the edge of the field were more sparrows, cardinals and cowbirds. A pair of blue jays were building a nest in poison ivy vines and an eastern towhee sang from an eye-level perch before flitting to the ground to scratch for a meal.
In the sky a turkey vulture and a black vulture offered a good comparison of species. As our walk ended, a kestrel offered a high-level fly-by.
Our next meeting will be at the John Heinz NWF at Tinicum on May 31 at 2:00 PM. For more information on the PA Young Birders Club, please Kevin at [email protected]

Good luck with the Young Birder’s Club! We need to get more young people involved in our feathered friends.
