Puerto Rico 8-Day | January 2011 (Day 4)

Puerto Rican Lizard Cuckoo |
Day three began early, arriving at Cambalache Forest for sunrise. This is always a great location to find endemics and the Puerto Rican Lizard Cuckoo did not disappoint! Also making appearances were Puerto Rican Flycatcher, Puerto Rican Tody and Puerto Rican Woodpecker.
Mangrove Cuckoo |
Specialties like the Mangrove Cuckoo (above) and Red-legged Thrush offered fine views as well.
White-winged Dove (left) and Puerto Rican Spindalis |
As we departed we swung a quick loop in search of the small flock of Red-masked Parakeets (only getting a quick fly-by) and found Troupials and a Puerto Rican Spindalis in beautiful morning light. White-winged Doves and Common Ground-doves were also quite common.
After lunch we made a stop at one of my favorite places… the Heladeria de Lares. A very unique ice cream shop. They have over 40 flavors, more than Baskin Robbins! Most of the flavors Baskin Robbins would never even dream of serving. The six pictured above, clockwise from top left are:
Guineo = Green Bananas
Arroz con Gandules = Seasoned Rice & Peas (yes, this is ice cream)
Requezon = a type of cheese similar to Ricotta
Cazuela = Puerto Rican stew
Arroz con Dulce = Caramel rice
Batata = Sweet Potato
Certainly not your typical flavors! For the faint of palette they do also have vanilla, chocolate, strawberry (and other less common fruit flavors), cookies and cream, rum raisin and rocky road!
