Female Ruby-throated Hummingbird and her two 11-day old chicks

What a huge difference in the growth of the hummer chicks in the last week. It is day 11 in my book and they are doing well. Go back to the day 4 (June 10) blog to compare bill and head size. With each passing day I can see more of them, especially when their mother comes in to feed them. Their pin feathers, which usually begin to show around day 7, are clearly visible, and their eyes, which should open around day 9, are definitely open – see photo above. I observed them for about an hour and the female came in twice at about 25 minute intervals to feed them during that time.

These two photos show the depth that the female bill is inserted into the chick’s mouth. Note that she has a feather on her crown (it looks like a tuft) that is out of place. You can also see how see uses her tail against the nest to balance herself, much like a woodpecker or creeper would when climbing a tree trunk.
