I was very excited to find a perched Merlin on my evening walk. This was certainly a surprise!! Merlin’s are scarce migrants, but what makes this sighting notable is the date July 29 and location. We are still in summer, and it is normally at least another month before we begin to see this species move through. During migration Merlins can be seen along the ridges at Hawk Mountain and along the coast at Cape May.

Really startling, even for a species so obviously "on the move" as Merlin! A great find.

It would be interesting to find out if it nested locally. For the amount of time that I spend on my bike or walking the neighborhood, one would have thought I would have come across it before if it had been nesting here.

But this sighting also makes me wonder if it's an indication of the changing environment…. and I mean not in a good way….

Species seem to adapt to conditions and move accordingly. I am sure it effects some more than others.

Man that bird looks scary! If I saw that thing I'd run and be all like, "Man that bird is gonna eat me!"
