I waited a long time to get my new Verizon iPhone, so I definitely want to protect it! I am hard on equipment and am prone to dropping things, so I needed a case that would stand up to the abuse I might throw at my new phone. I also use many Apps on my iPhone that I want to access in the field… iBird, Audubon Guides, GPS, etc., in many weather conditions. (Some of these apps I will review in the future.) The Survivor case by Griffin seemed like the perfect choice to protect my new toy… er… tool!

The thick rubber bumpers certainly add bulk to the sleek design of the iPhone, but that is expected in order to have the added protection. The ‘sticky’ rubber that offers such great grip also makes it more difficult to get out of my jeans’ pocket, but the case does come with a removable belt clip, were I so inclined to carry it that way. I would like the option of a lanyard connection so I would feel more comfortable using it on a boat.

The port covers offer dust and moisture protection. Though not a waterproof seal (it’s not advertised to be waterproof as the speaker covers have holes to allow the sound to be unhindered) the case will certainly stand up against all but the heaviest rain. The port covers allow very easy access to charge or plug in the headphones. However, the camera lens cover is very awkward to use as it must be held out of the way while shooting… nearly a three-handed job.

The thin, plastic window covering the glass screen of the iPhone does not seem to hinder the ‘touch’ effectiveness in any way. However, the thick frame along the edge of the screen does get in the way of some activities. The frame, which rises about 1/8 inch above the glass makes it more difficult to move the app icons to a different window as the edge of the screen is blocked from movement. Also, any on-screen buttons that are near the edge of the screen are more difficult to activate… i.e. on the keyboard, the Q, P, shift and delete keys need a little more effort to hit correctly.

Overall impression… I like the case and keep my phone it it all the time, even though there are a few drawbacks to the bulk, including not being able to use the phone in accessories like speaker stands.

Pros: Solid, sturdy protection. Grippy rubber. Weather resistant.

Cons: Bulky. Difficult to use some phone features. Can’t be used with some accessories.
